ABOUT THE ANAESTHETIC

All children are different and they need special attention when preparing for anaesthesia and surgery. The effects of hospitalisation on your child will be related to age; length of stay; parental factors; and your child’s previous experiences of hospital or medical care.

Your child will be given a full anaesthetic, which allows the specialist to perform the procedure and aims to ensure the child's safety and comfort.

On the day of your procedure, I will speak with you and your child. You will be able to be by his/her side until he/she is fully anaesthetised. In nearly all cases, no cannula is needed prior to commencing the anaesthetic. This is achieved by using a clear mask with an anaesthetic agent passing thru it.

During the procedure, your child will be fully anaesthetised. I will be there for the whole procedure to ensure that your child is safe and comfortable.

At the end of the procedure, your child will wake up and recover with a specialist recovery nurse by his/her side. When safe to, you will be asked to come into the recovery area to sit with your child. Initially, your child might be upset and hard to settle. This is a likely result of the disorientation cause by the anaesthetic wearing off, unfamiliarity with his/her surroundings and sometimes pain. This will resolve usually after 30 - 45 minutes.

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE

It is important that you speak to your specialist about what you need to bring to the hospital such as Xrays and scans. The hospital will contact you the day before the procedure with times of admission and fasting. It is very important that you follow these instructions. If you have any questions regarding your child's fasting before the operation please contact me.
